EAERE Winter School: Economy of Biodiversity

We are pleased to announce the Winter School, EAERE 2025 on the topic of Economics of Biodiversity, organized by the University Savoie Mont Blanc (USMB) in collaboration with the European Association of Environmental Economists and Resources (EAERE). The school will take place from 19 to 24 January 2025 at the Centre Jean 23 in Annecy-le-Vieux, Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, France.

This year’s theme, ‘Economics of Biodiversity’, will explore the connections between the economy, biodiversity, and nature. Based on the Review Dasgupta on the Economics of Biodiversity (2021), which stresses that the economy is ‘immersed’ in nature, the school will examine how the economic activity is limited by the biosphere, and how sustainable development depends on biodiversity.

Through five lectures given by experts, participants will address key questions, such as:

  • How do we measure biodiversity for economic analysis and accounting of natural capital?
  • What role can be played as nature-based solutions to address externalities local and global?
  • What is the contribution of biodiversity to the resilience and affordable insurance?
  • What is the role of public policies and the financial markets to halt the loss of biodiversity?

Lecturers and Topics

  • Ben Groom, University of Exeter, United Kingdom: Introduction to the Economics of Biodiversity – Measurement, Assessment, and the Economy is Immersed in the Nature
  • Stefan Baumgartner, University of Freiburg, Germany: Values Security and Resilience of Biodiversity
