Areas of research

The Research Group on the Economics of the Bioeconomy focuses on the intersection of economic, institutional and social related to the global transition towards a bioeconomy. The project ReValueD, currently in progress, is especially dedicated to bridging the gap between technological advances in the bio-economy and the socio-economic realities, especially in developing countries.

In the light of this aim, there have been important technological innovations, but there is still a gap between these skills and the socio-economic realities. In terms of social change, the project seeks to answer two general questions:

What type of social change is needed for the transition towards a bioeconomy sustainable?

What type of social change is derived from the transition towards a bioeconomy?

Topics of interest for the proposed research include:

Approaches to behavioral and experimental

Economic instruments, regulatory, and political

Governance of value chains in the bio-economy in the world (for example, coffee, cocoa, coconut)

Costs and benefits of the recovery of waste

Biodiversity, accounting for natural capital and change in land use

Environmental justice and marginalized groups
